We identify functional gaps in existing infrastructure and develop original solutions — from patent-pending tools to conceptual system architectures — with a focus on IP development over manufacturing.

About MLC R&D LLC

MLC R&D LLC was founded by Carlos Thigpen, a working plumbing technician turned independent researcher. Problems are sourced directly from field experience, and solutions are developed through applied research, first-principles reasoning, and cross-domain study.

Where a licensed engineer might approach a system through code compliance, MLC R&D LLC approaches it through the question: why does it work that way, and can it work better? That question has driven a body of work spanning drain-line robotics, municipal water treatment, space waste management, and optical agricultural systems.

How We Research 

MLC R&D applies a field-first research methodology: every project begins with a documented problem observed in real trade conditions, not a theoretical gap. From there, research extends across chemistry, materials science, fluid dynamics, and adjacent technologies to build a solution that is grounded in why — not just what.

This approach consistently produces designs that go beyond component-level problem solving. A water filtration specification, for example, isn't chosen to protect equipment — it's chosen based on the molecular interaction between specific water chemistry and the end material being processed. That depth of reasoning is the differentiator.

 

"Most installers see filtered water as equipment protection. We research what the specific contaminants in that water supply do to the specific material being processed at the molecular level — and spec the filter accordingly."

Featured Project: Conduit Cleaning Device

The conduit cleaning device is the first MLC R&D product to complete the full development cycle from field problem identification through design, iteration, and patent application. The tool addresses a recurring limitation in conduit maintenance — specifically the inefficiency and damage risk of existing cleaning methods in trade applications.

Now entering manufacturing and initial market distribution, this product represents the firm's first commercial milestone and demonstrates the viability of the MLC R&D development model.
